A Message from Our Music Director…
Greetings, and welcome to our 2012-2013 season—Revitalize the Spirit! It often takes most of us a long summer vacation to rejuvenate our minds and renew our energy levels. This year, the LSO will embark on a musical journey that will focus on just that—keeping the spirit alive and well all year long!
After we kick off the season with our September "LSO Chamber Concert," we will capture the essence of the fall spirit in our October concert. Inspired by Germany's "Oktoberfest," we will perform some of the greatest works of all time by Brahms and Mozart (featuring solo clarinetist Lynda Dembowski—principal clarinetist of the US Naval Academy Band of Annapolis). The concert will conclude with Beethoven's jubilant and boisterous Symphony No. 4. An afternoon of favorites not to be missed!
The LSO is thrilled to join forces with Arundel Vocal Arts Society (AVAS) under the direction of Jo Ann Kulesza. The program will feature Morten Lauridsen's Lux Aeterna along with A Feast of Carols arranged by Randol Alan Bass. This concert will be sure to lift your spirits and fill your afternoon with holiday cheer as we perform some of the most enlightening selections from the traditional and the contemporary masterwork repertoire.
January defines a time where we all seek revitalization and renewed commitment to all that we do—what better way to celebrate the New Year than with an afternoon at the Pops! This concert will feature William Bloomquist in Gershwin's world-famous Rhapsody in Blue along with local vocalist Dana Robinson in a variety of show tunes and jazz standards that will be sure to keep your winter spirits soaring!
Come raise your glass and toast the LSO at our 3rd annual LSO Gala hosted by Homestead Gardens of Davidsonville this spring. You will hear our musicians perform a variety of fun, yet intimate chamber music while experiencing great food and wine from our local vendors, not to mention the silent auction. Nothing captures the spirit of spring like an evening in the garden—you won't want to miss it!
There is nothing better to revitalize your spirit than letting your imagination run wild! No one knew that better than the composers highlighted on this concert. Manuel de Falla's Three Cornered Hat Suite No. 1, Schubert's Rondo for Violin(featuring Claudia Chudacoff of the U.S. Marine Band's White House Chamber Orchestra), and Georges Bizet's Symphony No. 1 will be sure to capture your mind and revive your imagination.
Inspired by composers from northern Europe, our season will close with Sibelius' lively Symphony No. 3 paired with Grieg's Norwegian Dances—a dance suite that will be sure to get your toe tapping and heart racing! We will be featuring Seth Cook in the rarely performed Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto. Be sure to join us in this celebrated grand finale as we conclude the 2012-2013 season with revitalized spirits!
As you listen to the LSO this season, take a moment to realize how you may help us achieve greater recognition and stability within our community. In addition to attending our subscription concerts, you may be interested in serving in our volunteer program, "Friends of the LSO." Just ask!
Each year, we look forward to providing you will quality classical music that features our exceptional local soloists and outstanding orchestra members. I would like to thank our sponsors, donors, and most certainly, our audience members for your continued support. Now, sit back and enjoy the music!
Best wishes,
Anna Binneweg
